Border Community Showcase @ Brussels Electronic Music Festival, Belgium : 27th March 2010

The second edition of the Brussels Electronic Music Festival takes place on the weekend of 26th/27th/28th March this year, and Border Community is proud to play a part by hosting a showcase on the second night (Saturday 27th) in Brussels' BOZAR Centre For Fine Arts.

Always pleased to play in Belgium, our heroic untamable genre-bender James Holden is joined by the primordial pagan beats of Luke Abbott's live show, and the future Moog anthems of an Avus DJ set as he counts down to the release of his next Border Community EP. Dan "the visuals man" Tombs will be our VJ for the evening.

Other acts guesting over the weekend include a live show from reformed krautrock legends Cluster (also Saturday), a Raster Noton showcase on Sunday, and appearances from Thomas Brinkmann, Hexstatic, Quenum, Dan Curtin and many more: see the Bozar website for full line-up details and ticket information. Border Community @ Corsica Studios, London : 5th March 2010

Our Corsica Studios residency in conjunction with party go-getters We Fear Silence continues apace on Friday 5th March with another busting-out-of-the-box selection of music-for-dancing-to, all headed up and rounded off by the enchanting visions of our musical trailblazer James Holden.

In the mainroom, we are excited to welcome Mr Andrew Hung, the electronic ambassador of the popular beat combo Fuck Buttons, granting him a DJ slot in which he will demonstrate just what exemplary taste in music he has. Our dependable former End resident Avus will also be making his Corsica debut for us, massaging the old faithful with some of the Moog anthems from his forthcoming Border Community EP, whilst his Northampton protege Falling From Cloud 9 is also presented for your early doors delectation, providing some kraut-flavoured live action to get you in the mood for dancing, and romancing.

Over in the smaller (but no less important) room, we'll be flying in special guests Kate Wax (of former Output / Mental Groove fame) from Switzerland to join the family with a rare DJ set, and elusive techno sailor Petter from Sweden for a long-awaited family reunion. Not forgetting to show our support to the British electronica underground of course, which is why BLOC party boy Ed Chamberlain will also be hopping on a train from Brighton to represent with his laptop stuffed full of twinkly electro-breaks.

Visuals come from Dan Tombs, and as usual you would be wise to expect the unexpected, for the inimitable An'Unexpectacle will also be out on some sort of manoevres. Luke Abbott - Whitebox Stereo : Out Now

Golden boy du jour Luke Abbott showcases his impressively mathematical yet ultimately hedonistic musical credentials with the elasticated primordial beats of his new Whitebox Stereo collection: a refreshing organic antidote that we believe is the sound of dancefloors future.

This year we will be seeing in the New Year (and indeed, the new decade) in a Bavarian style down in Munich, when we team up with the crew from the sadly defunct Die Registratur (one of Mr James Holden's favourite clubs ever!) to bring you a special event in the grand surroundings of the Alte Kongresshalle, as we collectively proclaim Happy New Border Community!

James Holden will of course be heading up the line-up, laying down the beats from midnight with a special early doors set to reward the eager beavers. Special guest and Border Booking comrade Phil Kieran, hot to trot from his recent Shh album on Cocoon, then joins us for a live set, as does our own pagan technologist Luke Abbott, broadcasting in full Whitebox Stereo to usher in a brave new era of music-for-dancing-to. Finally, a taste of things to come in the New Year comes from original boy Avus, flexing his DJ muscles with a flavour of what we might expect from his devilish forthcoming new Border Community EP. Visuals on the night come from the supremely talented Dan Tombs.

Border Community will be teaming up with renegade promotion team We Fear Silence to kick off our long-awaited new London residency at Elephant & Castle's homely Corsica Studios on 6th November: we had such a nice time at the Hard Islands launch party back in May that we just had to make it our regular base. As ever, James Holden will of course be at the controls, heading up another bill of the finest danceable electronica that the UK currently has to offer.

With our special guests we are truly spoiling you, with old End partner-in-crime Kieran Hebden (aka Four Tet) working the mainroom as only he knows how, Werk Disc's twinkly-toed electrodelicist Lone hopefully serving up a live set preview of eagerly anticipated new album 'Ecstasy and Friends' in the second room, and brotherly synth-and-drum duo Rocketnumbernine, whose eminently danceable live improvisations as heard on new album You Reflect Me will provide an early doors cosmic-tinged warm-up workout. Community support officers for the evening are drafted in from Norfolk and Wales, with Luke Abbott putting forthcoming Border Community pagan techno anthem 'Whitebox Stereo' through its paces in his hypnotic live set, and Nathan Fake and Wesley Matsell sharing backroom DJ duties, between them attempting to work as much intelligence into their dance music as our crowd's hedonistic demands will permit.

Lord of the Hard Islands Nathan Fake naturally takes on headline duties in Room 1, bringing the unstoppable industrial assault of his laptop live show in all of its intense, visual glory. With Nathan's help we have put together a suitably complementary main room support team, comprising a genre-spanning warm-up DJ set from our new recruit Wesley Matsell, a live performance from Mighty Robot's Operator showcasing his own new 'How To Make Bombs and Influence People' album, and an intimate closing set from our own James Holden with his inimitable futureproof experimental take on that age-old business of music-to-dance-to.

Room 2 is ably hosted by DJ duo about town Allez-Allez, providing the same type of impeccable danceable eclectic blend that we know and love from their eponymous podcast blog. "The combination of cheesy food and uncheesy music worked so well last time that I'm very excited to have another chance to play and dance while weighed down by half a kilo of gruyere," wrote our own James Holden, who will be playing records on the evening alongside the Allez-Allez boys in a simultaneous celebration of the occasion of our own Christmas Party, and the birthday of Steve from Allez-Allez. A complimentary fondue buffet will be provided early in the evening.

Border Community @ The End, London : Saturday 22nd November

Our London home for the last two years The End will sadly close its doors for good in January 2009, but we will be saying our own personal farewells this weekend, when the final edition of this Border Community London residency of ours is scheduled to take place. A sad occasion indeed, but we have every intention to give the club the send-off it truly deserves, with a formidable musical line-up assembled to provide the suitably melancholy soundtrack for the occasion.

Our super-special guest for the evening is the amazing Ellen Allien, seizing this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to grace that legendary main room at The End before it is gone forever. The Border Community faithful will of course be out in force too, with previous guest Nathan Fake joining regular boys James Holden and Avus for the main room knees-up, whilst musically-compatible co-pilot Kieran Hebden pulls his final all-nighter over in the lounge.

Do join us to help say goodbye to this old friend of ours, whose warm hospitality has provided us with the perfect forum in which to present our own particular pernickety musical vision to the world. Border Community @ Concrete & Glass, Plastic People, London : Friday 3rd October

A chance to witness the Border Community experience in the intimate surroundings of Plastic People comes on Friday 3rd October, when we are delighted to be taking over the venue as part of the Concrete & Glass festival of music and contemporary art which runs in various East London locations on October 2nd-3rd.

Our new Welsh experimentalist Wesley Matsell will be playing a few records to warm up for live sets from dance blueprint rewriter Luke Abbott and warm and fuzzy analogue electrician Fairmont, before twisted DJ individualist James Holden takes over until closing time.

Wesley Matsell - Bernwerk : Out Now

As we continue to mine the rich seam of emerging British talent, Welshman Wesley Matsell steps forward as the latest addition to the Border Community family, teaming up with us to unleash the Schaffel-Rave-Monster that is the mighty Bernwerk on an unsuspecting world.

The Airwolf-meets-Jean-Michel-Jarre strains of 'Bernwerk' have been a highlight of many a James Holden set for quite some time now, so we are happy to have finally put a full release together around it to reveal the other sides to 25 year old Wesley Matsell's most intriguing personality. 'Infinity Sentinel' offers a brief interlude of beautifully abrasive experimental psychedelics, whilst the 15 minute long recorded-in-one-take live improvisations of 'Diffussion27' create an introspective after-hours home-listening gem whose twinkly layers gently drift and morph like a modern day Tangerine Dream.

"All the tracks are great and the cover is great too!" wrote our good friend Kieran Hebden when we sent him the release, and to appreciate Wesley's homespun fractal goodness yourself in all its full-size glory you really ought to track down the vinyl release in your local record store. Fairmont - I Need Medicine : Out Now

Fairmont's lush and krauty Coloured In Memory album of last year saw techno get personal, with Fairmont man Jake Fairley stepping up to the microphone on a number of tracks to deliver up his own idiosyncratic take on the techno-pop song: dark and brooding new single I Need Medicine is one such number.

Remix duties on this new release were gladly assigned to old friend-of-Fairmont from Toronto Pan/Tone, and Fairmont's favourite Chilean electro-rocker and Border Community label mate Ricardo Tobar: Pan/Tone's vocal-free-yet-instantly-recognisable slap-bass emo-techno groove contrasts neatly with Ricardo Tobar's exuberant and punchy crunchy guitar stomp. Bonus B-side 'Centre Of Gravity' rounds off the package with a gently rolling example of that type of wistful early morning melancholy that Fairmont does so well.

The excellent We Love Art promoters from Paris have invited the Border Community family over the channel on 5th July for a very special event in a secret woodland location on the outskirts of Paris. To help create the required magical party atmosphere on the evening we will have noisy bastard Nathan Fake and cheery screengazer Ricardo Tobar playing live, as well as DJ sets from pixie prince James Holden and techno weasel Petter.

Another fortuitous Border Community summer meet-up takes place on Friday 18th July in Belgium, when members of the crew will come together to kick off this year's 10 Days Off city festival at the Vooruit in Ghent. First lady of techno Misstress Barbara is scheduled to rendezvous with current tour buddies Ricardo Tobar (live) and James Holden in Ghent for their final European adventure together before Ricardo's return to Chile.

Our Chilean representative Ricardo Tobar is all geared up for his second release on Border Community, the busting-out-of-the-box 'Boy Love Girl EP' which hits shops on 23rd June. He has also recently unveiled his matching boundary-pushing live show in his native Chile, and the EP release seemed the perfect excuse to make the big leap across the pond for his first European mini-tour alongside musical mentor James Holden.

The next Border Community night at The End on Saturday 24th May is fast approaching, and this time we have decided to mix things up a little. Lounge stalwart Kieran Hebden has been itching to rinse out the main room of The End for some time now, so we thought it was about time we finally let him hop over to have it with main room mainstays James Holden and Avus. Also making his main room debut is our latest recruit Luke Abbott, who will be unveiling his spanking new live set of next level music for dancing to of the type heard on his recent Tuesday EP.

The Kieran-shaped gap left in the lounge is then snugly plugged by guest hosts for the evening Lo Recordings, where they will be offering up live sets of ecstatic electro from Black Devil Disco Club and melancholic italo-disco from Appaloosa, as well as DJ action from milky disco man Milky Globe and lo-fi pop lothario Vincent Oliver.

The latest electronic troubador to be plucked from the Norfolk countryside and transplanted to the Border Community is one Luke Abbott, who joins us to release the musically ambitious selection of modern psychedelia that is the Tuesday EP: available to buy on mp3 here, or on vinyl from your local record shop to own your own piece of our infamous Border Community landscape as customised by Luke's own fair hand.

Former Output man Luke has crammed six short but extremely sweet songs into just 22 minutes of EP, where DJ-friendly bottom shifters rub up against dubbed-out nu-Kraut and 8-bit bleeps to form a cohesive home-listening experience almost worthy of (allbeit slightly short!) mini-album status.

Filmmaker and friend-of-Luke Michael Page of Processed Films has also created a rather cute animated illustration of the water cycle in video form to accompany the euphoric and twinkly EP track 'Melody120', which we have just added to our Videos section and our new Border Community Youtube channel.

Border Community Japanese Tour : June 2008

The Border Community dream team of James Holden, Nathan Fake and Petter will be heading off to tour Japan together in June, and very excited they are about it indeed.

First stop is the very special Taico Club Festival at Kodamano-Mori from Saturday 7th - Sunday 8th June, celebrating James' birthday with a weekend in the mountains. This is followed by a three date club tour, taking in the positively perfect Precious Hall in Sapporo on Thursday 12th June, JBs in Nagoya on Friday 13th June, and finally a "Border Occupation" at the Triangle, Kannon and Drop clubs in Osaka on Saturday 14th.

Our resident cheese freak James Holden is very excited indeed about his next London DJ appearance on Wednesday 26th March at The Fondue Fun-Do, a collaboration with our good friends Allez Allez to bring you a special evening of cheese and tunes in the heart of Soho.

We have hired out the basement of London's oldest Swiss restaurant St Moritz (161 Wardour Street), where tasty vats of fondue will be dished up from 9pm to the accompaniment of an equally tasty soundtrack provided by cheesehead James Holden and the Allez Allez DJs to take you through to the 3am close. Be sure to arrive early to avoid missing out on the complimentary fondue fun!

All tickets for the Fondue Fun-Do have now completely sold out. There will be no further tickets available on the door on the evening, so please do not come down to the venue unless you have a ticket!
