Communal Living

Dream venue Corsica Studios is offering plenty of reasons to make the journey down to Elephant & Castle over the coming weeks, not least for our own next Border Community event there on September 24th. DJ overlord James Holden of course remains omnipresent at the decks, but joining him for this edition of the Border Commune concept will be our old friend Perc the techno giant with a long-overdue early doors eclectic set along the lines of his recent spot-on Psychic Animal Bandwagon Mix for our mutual homies Allez Allez, and our new friends from Italy Margot, celebrating their recent conscription to the Border Community (the ‘France EP’ hits shops in October!) with a debut UK outing for their unique DJ-and-live-set combo.

Since the mainroom on this occasion promises to be about as dance-centric as we get, it is left to Room 2 to serve up that flavour of something different, this time in the form of ‘The Holkham Drone Zone’, where Corsica’s B-wing is transformed into a cosy dedicated space for an evening of droning (improvisational or otherwise), all presided over by your noisy host DJ Wesley Matsell. This exploration in the key of drone is of course inspired by the title of Luke Abbott‘s big dog debut album Holkham Drones, so the man himself will be bringing along some of his analogue goodies for a Doepfer show-down against fellow modular superpower James Holden. Resident situationist An’Unexpectacle is naturally also getting in on the act, heading up an “interactive choral concentrational hypnosis” session, otherwise known as a drone zone, whereby members of the audience are invited to contribute their own voice tones to an improvisational collective choral creation. (On a previous occasion we followed our pie-eyed piper to a goods container in Bow for a similar experiment in vocal droning, the innately harmonious results of which were truly liberating, even life-changing, so your participation is enthusiastically encouraged). Noise demon Perc may also be tempted over to the drone side for some analogue indulgences, whilst nice young man Wesley Matsell, as well as plumbing the noisiest depths of his record collection, also promises a monolithic beast of primal diginoise to send you all on your way with noise in your heart.

On top of all of that, our go-to man for all things visual Dan Tombs will also be taking a swift sidestep into the audio dimension with a live performance of his audio-visual piece Tele Chromatic Distortion, a snippet of which you can see below (handily also serving as a suitable taster for the whole drone-themed side of the evening):

Attendance is compulsory (you should know that by now), so get your advance tickets from WeGotTickets.

And if you love Corsica Studios as much as we do, you may also be interested in the following other welcome excuses to visit: this Friday 8th September sees the 6th edition (and the first one we can actually go to!) of legendary Norseman Prins ThomasEkstravaganza night, with Optimo on special guest duties in Room 2; and the following Saturday 18th the inimitable Rephlex revive their RePhresh party concept with the aid of DMX Krew, Ceephax, Bogdan Racynski et al. And a little further off, our guest disc jockey du jour Perc will be making a Corsica reappearance on Friday 18th November for his debut live show at the Colony vs Perc Trax showdown alongside Peter Van Hoesen and Ramadanman, but unfortunately none of you can go to that, because you will all be down the road at the Coronet for Four Tet‘s own Caribou / James Holden / Nathan Fake / Rocketnumbernine extravaganza. So it is a good job that you will get to see Perc at our night instead!
